The IOU does not discriminate against race, gender, color or creed and will admit all the students who are interested and qualified to undertake a program of their choice. The admitted students must commence their studies on the stipulated time, or apply for deferment of the date of commencement; otherwise, the offer of admission will elapse. On admission, the student is required to sign an undertaking to be of good behavior and to abide by the rules and regulations governing the conduct of students of the University.
Proficiency Certificate Courses
These courses are open to all interested candidates who wish to learn a trade or acquire a skill for daily subsistence. No previous experience or qualification is necessary. Proficiency certificate does not qualify a candidate to be admitted for an academic degree without possessing the basic qualifications.
Academic Certificate Programs
The basic requirement is a First School Leaving Certificate and a JSCE/SSCE/GCE/WASC attempted or equivalent
Post Graduate Diploma
Any of the following qualifications is required to be admitted to pursue a post graduate diploma programme in the International Open University
OR any other qualification equivalent to any of the above, from a recognized higher institution and acceptable to the senate of the University
Masters Degree Programs
Any of the following qualifications is required to be admitted to study for a Masters degree in the University.
1. A first degree from a recognized University with at least second class lower division and the International Open University Matriculation requirement must be met.
.2. A Post Graduate Diploma from a recognized University and the candidate must satisfy the International Open University Matriculation requirement
Doctor of Philosophy Programs
To enroll for a Doctor of Philosophy degree, a candidate must possess a Masters degree from a University recognized by the senate of The International Open University (IOU) in the related field of study with a minimum score average of not less than 60% and above or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 3.5 on a 5 point scale. Candidates who do not possess a Masters degree may be required to enroll for the Masters and the Ph.D combined and may be upgraded to Ph.D student status on good performance. The Ph.D program is through course work and research. Ph.D candidates shall be interviewed by the appropriate committee of the school of Post graduate studies before admission is offered. Applicants are expected to forward their academic transcripts with letters of recommendation from three referees of which two out of the three must have been the applicant’s lecturers and an employer.
Duration of Course:
The duration of each course depends on the student’s pace and medium of study. The IOU provides students’ support services at all her study centres world wide, and the students’ counselors are also available through telecommunications and internet. The support services include course materials, text books, audio tapes, CD-ROMS, counseling, special tutorial meetings, tutor-marked assignments, examinations and use of the university libraries located at the study centres.
Assessment Policy
Each student must be assessed on his/her realization of the objectives of the courses offered. The authorization to release results, students’ transcripts, certificates and examination time table is vested only on the Registrar.
Payment Of Fees
A fee of five thousand Naira (N5000.00) or its equivalent in US Dollars or Euro is to be paid for the application form. Fees are paid through designated banks. Certified cheques and bank drafts are accepted in favour of the International Open University
Credit System
The International Open University as many other similar universities, follows the course credit system to qualify for the award of its certificates. One credit system is gained for over two hours per week study over 15 weeks in a semester. To qualify for the award of a Bachelors degree, a student has to obtain a total of one hundred and thirty to one hundred and forty two credit hours. The number of credits per course depends on the volume of study, with one credit being estimated to be about 30 hours of actual study. A two or three credit unit course may be estimated to be 60 and 90 hours each. Thirty credits may be estimated to be one academic year of study. To be conferred with a degree of the IOU, the student must satisfy all the basic and departmental requirements and the senate of the IOU must approve the conferment.
